Disco Queen - Donna Summer
1948 - 2012
5 time Grammy Award Winner Donna Summer has long been considered the Queen of Disco. Her hit the Last Dance was usually the last song played at discos and school dances to close out the evening. It also catapulted her to an international superstar.
Following the success of Last Dance, Summer led the pop charts in 1978 and 1979 with strings of hits. Summer was the first artist to have three double albums reach No. 1 on Billboard's album chart: Live and More, Bad Girls, On the Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes I & II. Only Madonna has had more number one hits.
Born LaDonna Adrian Gaines on December 31, 1948 she grew up singing. She became a professional in the German stage productions of Godspell and Showboat. She anglisized her German first husband's name of Sommer and became Donna Summer. In the early 70's she was a back up singer for Three Dog Night, before igniting a solo career.
Although she has passed too early, Donna Summer influenced countless artists such as Madonna and Beyonce, and paved the way for Duran Duran and David Bowie to enter the dance music world.
